A dive knife is a tool, not a weapon
After choosing your dive knife, the next question is : « where to set up your knife ? » The stereotype of the diver with his knife attached to the leg is over. Not really. There are still irreducible.
Traditional settings
The first place we think immediately to setup a knife, that’s the leg and more exactly in the calf, whatever on the right or left side. This position of the knife has only one goal : to impress other divers. This location has two disadvantages : you can lose your knife without noticing it and your leg may stuck because of your knife. To prevent this second point, just put the knife on the inner side of the leg.
Other settings
A wise location that I see more and more is to place the knife on the BCD. At the pockets level or on the inflator hose. The location is conveniently accessible, but always present the same failure : you can lose your knife without you noticing it. And remember, you can not place a large knife anywhere on the BCD without reducing accessibility and comfort.
So where should I setup my knife ?
If you red my previous post about choosing a dive knife, I told you how many times I used mine. With this in mind, I remembered where could be my knife in those moments. In fact, it was there where I learned to set it up since I was a technical diver : in the pocket of my BCD.
« But if my knife in the pocket of the BCD, it is difficult to access ? » That’s true, but for the number of times you will use it, take the risk of losing it or stuck because of it, it is better that it is well placed in the pocket of your BCD . It is a useful tool, but you will not use it all dives. Check it sometimes, make sure it is always in the same place, trying to reach it with one hand while diving (without removing it) to be sure it is accessible. Because when you will really need it, it will not be time to look for it.
